1-4-1 Offense

The 1-4-1 lacrosse offense is a dynamic formation that allows a team to exploit defensive weaknesses. It is a widely popular set used across all levels of competition. Teams that want to open space and capitalize on their players’ athleticism will benefit from this strategy.

This article will teach you how to operate in this formation and dominate the competition using ball movement, speed, and creativity.

How to Set Up the 1-4-1 Offense

In the 1-4-1 offense, there are four players positioned around the offensive zone in a diamond formation. Two players occupy the crease, directly in front of the goal. It is called the 1-4-1 because there is one player at the top center, four players in a line across the middle, and one player behind the goal at X.

To organize the lacrosse positions, the midfielders will fill the top center and wing positions, while the attackmen will fill the crease spots and X. However, you can adjust as you see fit based on your players’ skills.

How to Operate the 1-4-1 Offense

Once you have organized into the 1-4-1 offense, you can begin your attack. You can initiate your attack from anywhere on the perimeter of the 1-4-1 offense. This means you can begin dodging from the top center, from the wings, or from behind at X.

Before initiating the dodge, everyone must be on the same page. All players must loudly communicate to determine who will initiate. It is also important to move the ball around the perimeter so that everyone is involved.

Once you have determined who is initiating the dodge, that player works to create a scoring opportunity. Dodgers can choose to attack on their own or work a two-man game. If it is a favorable matchup, players must work to create space for the attacking player.

A crucial aspect of the 1-4-1 is “creating leverage”. Creating leverage means gaining an offensive advantage by dodging and drawing a slide or rotation from the defense. Drawing a slide or rotation causes the defense to become disoriented, therefore opening up scoring chances.

Off-ball players are just as important as those who have the ball on offense. Those who do not have the ball must always be moving to find shooting or passing lanes. Off-ball players must understand how to create leverage and help their team gain an advantage.

Advantages of the 1-4-1 Offense

1. Creates Space: Similar to the Open-Set, the 1-4-1 offense opens the field for skilled dodgers. Players can also move into shooting and passing lanes that can create scoring chances.

2. Allows for Creativity: Players have options within the offense, which facilitates creativity. Creativity keeps the defense guessing, leading to more shooting opportunities.

3. Dodges from Anywhere on the Field: Players have plenty of space to work with, meaning they can choose where they want to dodge. Strategic dodges can draw defensive players out of position, which opens up shooting and passing lanes.

4. Exploits Zone Defenses: The 1-4-1 is positioned in a way that fills the open gaps of a zone defense. Quick ball movement can lead to defensive breakdowns and more scoring chances.

5. Involves Everyone on Offense: Each player has a role in the 1-4-1 offense. Regardless of whether you have the ball, you can make an impact by moving and shifting to confuse the defense and get yourself open for a shot.

Potential Drawbacks to Consider When Using the 1-4-1 Offense

1. Caters to More Advanced Offenses: The 1-4-1 is a more complex offense that requires a firm understanding of lacrosse. It may not be suited for beginner-level players.

2. Long Passes Due to Spacing: The spacing in the 1-4-1 offense forces players to make long passes, which can lead to mistakes or turnovers. Players must move their feet and get closer to their teammates when throwing and catching in the 1-4-1 set.

3. Focuses on Long Dodges: If dodging isn’t a strong suit of your team, the 1-4-1 may be difficult to implement. Players must be able to get past their defenders and cause defensive rotations.

Drills to Improve the 1-4-1 Offense

1. Passing and Catching:

One of the key components of a successful 1-4-1 offense is strong passing and catching skills. To improve this, drills such as the “3-man weave” can be used. In this drill, three players line up in a straight line, with the middle player having a ball. The player in the middle will pass to one side, and then run to the opposite side to receive a pass from that player before passing to the third player on the original side. This drill helps improve quick passes and catching on the move.

2. Dodging and Footwork:

Effective dodging and footwork are crucial in creating scoring opportunities in the 1-4-1 offense. One drill that can help improve these skills is called the “figure-eight dodge.” In this drill, players will set up two cones in a figure-eight shape, with one cone being slightly higher than the other. Players will then start at one cone and use quick footwork to dodge around both cones while maintaining control of their stick and ball.

3. Two-Man Game:

The 1-4-1 offense often involves utilizing two players working together to create scoring opportunities. A great drill for improving this aspect of the offense is called “2v2 Side-Field.” In this drill, two offensive players will work together against two defenders on one-half of the field, using quick passes and cuts to create open shots on goal.

4. Shooting:

Shooting the lacrosse ball is essential in any offense, but especially in the 1-4-1 where there may be many opportunities for shots on goal. To improve shooting accuracy and power, coaches can use drills such as “Positional Shooting” where players practice taking shots from various positions around the goal.

5. 1v1 Competition:

In lacrosse, being able to win individual matchups is important for success on both offense and defense. To improve this, coaches can use drills such as “1v1 Scrapping” where players compete against each other to gain possession of a ground ball and then score. This not only helps with individual skills but also teaches players to be aggressive and competitive in game-like situations.

By incorporating these drills into practice and focusing on improving specific skills related to the 1-4-1 offense, teams can become more efficient and effective in executing this offensive strategy.
