How to String a Low Pocket
Learning how to string a low pocket may seem challenging, but anyone can do it with practice. Players of all skill levels use a low pocket to achieve a high level of accuracy and control. Read on if you are interested in learning how to perfect the low pocket and take your game to the next level.
What is a Low Pocket?
A low pocket is a type of lacrosse pocket where the ball sits low in a player’s lacrosse stick. This allows for a smooth, accurate release while maintaining a high level of hold and control. This is especially useful for feeders who need to complete accurate passes.
A low pocket is strung with a long, narrow channel. A channel is created by tying the mesh down tight to the plastic as you string the sidewalls. Creating a narrow channel ensures the ball will follow the same release every time it leaves the pocket. With mid and high pockets, there is less of a channel, meaning the ball may not have the same release every time.
Although the low pocket is great for accurate feeding and shooting, it has its drawbacks. Outside shooters may not prefer a low pocket because it is more difficult to generate power. Because of the long, narrow channel, the ball comes out of the pocket slower. Additionally, it can be harder to scoop ground balls.
What Positions Use a Low Pocket?
Low pockets are predominantly used by feeding attackmen or midfielders. Many players prefer a low pocket because they can dodge, pass, and shoot without any fear of the ball jarring loose. A low pocket is great for feeders because of its accuracy. The tight channel allows the ball to consistently go where the player wants every time it leaves the stick. This is essential for completing passes and racking up assists.
Although the low pocket is typically preferred by feeding attackmen, any position can master this pocket. Make sure to try different types of pockets before settling on one.

Shooters

Break In Your Pocket!
Once you have completed your low pocket, you must break it in. Breaking in your pocket makes all the mesh and strings stretch out to form your final product. There are multiple ways to shape your lacrosse pocket.
First, you can use a baseball bat to pound out the middle of your pocket. You can also wet the mesh and string and use a lacrosse ball to pound out the pocket. Once you have broken in the mesh, throw and shoot around to see if you like your low pocket.
Once you have broken your low pocket in, you are good to go! Be sure to practice until you are comfortable with your new stick.
