How to String a High Pocket
A high pocket offers a quick, snappy release, typically used by outside shooters. If you want extra power on your shot, this may be the right pocket for you. Read on to learn how to string a high pocket and take your game to the next level.
What is a High Pocket?
A high pocket is a type of lacrosse pocket that allows the ball to sit closer to the top of the lacrosse head. When the ball is released, it comes out quicker because it has less distance to travel out of the pocket compared to a mid or low pocket.
It takes skill to use a high pocket because there is less of a channel, which means passes and shots can be harder to aim. Additionally, high pockets have a high amount of whip. “Whip” is the amount of snap a pocket has when a ball is released from the stick. A low amount of whip will make the ball release upwards, while a high amount will make the ball release downwards.
To determine if a high pocket is right for you, test out your new pocket by practicing shooting and throwing.
What Positions Use a High Pocket?
A high pocket is preferred by players who shoot from the outside or want to have quick releases on their passes. Offensive players such as midfielders and attackmen may like the advantages of a high pocket for passing and shooting. However, a high pocket may be less accurate than a mid or low pocket, so it is important to find a balance that you prefer.
Defensemen also prefer a high pocket for groundballs. Because the pocket is located close to the top of the lacrosse stick, the ball can quickly be scooped up and handled by a long pole. Additionally, defensemen must throw quick passes to transition the ball out of the defensive end.
When deciding what pocket is right for you, determine how you like the ball to release and what would be best suited to your game. With the right amount of practice, you can master any lacrosse pocket.
Pros and Cons of a High Pocket
A high pocket in lacrosse refers to the position of the pocket on the head of the lacrosse stick. It is located closer to the top of the head, allowing for a higher release point when shooting or passing. While it may offer advantages for some players, there are also potential drawbacks that come with using a high pocket. In this article, we will explore the pros and cons of a high pocket in lacrosse.
Pros:
1. Increased Power: One advantage of a high pocket is that it can significantly increase the power of shots and passes. Due to its higher position, there is more force force behind each shot or pass compared to lower or mid pockets.
2. Great for Ground Balls: Another pro of a high pocket is picking up ground balls. As the pocket is higher up on the stick, it can make it easier to scoop up ground balls quickly in fast-paced situations.
3. Increased Ball Retention: A high pocket can also help with ball retention as it allows players to cradle and control the ball more easily. The higher position of the pocket makes it easier to keep the ball secure while running and dodging through defenders.
4. Better Control: With a high pocket, players have better control over their passes and shots. The higher release point provides more leverage, allowing for greater control over where the ball goes.
5. Versatility: A high pocket can be beneficial for both attackmen and midfielders as it offers versatility in their play style. It allows them to shoot powerfully from a distance but also maintain good ball control while driving towards the goal.
Cons:
1. Decreased Accuracy: One of the main cons of a high pocket is that it reduces accuracy when shooting or passing. Since the pocket has a wider channel, passed and shots may not have the same release every time.
2. Less Effective Feeding: A high pocket may not be ideal for players who specialize in feeding. The higher release point may make it harder to accurately pass the ball to teammates, especially in tight spaces.
3. Not Suitable for All Positions: A high pocket may not be suitable for all positions in lacrosse. For example, goalies and defenders may benefit more from a lower pocket that allows for quicker clearing and checks.
Ultimately, the decision to use a high pocket should depend on the player’s style of play and position on the field. Experimenting with different pocket positions is recommended to find what works best for each player’s skills and preferences.
