Man to Man Defense: Adjacent Slide Package
A guide for how to properly play and coach lacrosse man to man team defense with an adjacent slide package.
Man to Man Defense With an Adjacent Slide
- Man to Man Defense with an Adjacent Slide is most commonly used when the offensive set (or formation) is an “Open Set”. This means that there are no offensive players on the crease, and instead they are spread out around the outside edge of the box.
- This is one of the most simple defensive packages, but still can be tough for players to understand.
- The goal of this slide package is similar to most defenses, do not let one player dodge by himself past a defender and all the way to the goal for a shot.
- If a player is dodging and becoming a threat, we must send an extra player to help double team the ball and stop his progress towards the goal.
- Those extra defenders who are sliding to help are the “Hot Left” slide, and “Hot Right” Slide (Also called Left One and Right One).
- Depending on which side the player with the ball dodges, that is what side the slide will come from (either the left or the right side of the man defending the ball.)
- The hot left and hot right defenders are the defenders who are adjacent, or next to, the defender covering the ball.
- If you are a hot left or hot right defender, you should be “pinched in” or have your body positioned closer to the man dodging the that you are ready to help and don’t need to cover as much ground in the event that you need to help them as a slide.
- The last piece of this defense is the “two slide”. These are also adjacent and are the ”Left Two”and “Right Two”. These defenders have the job of people ready to fill in and cover the man that the “Hot Left or Hot Right” was covering before the left to slide to double team the ball.
- The bottom line is to have all of your defenders packed in, and ready to slide to help in the situation where an offensive player is dodging towards the crease for a closer shot.
